Beginning his military career in 1907 and in 1912 volunteered for Morocco. He acceded to the rank of general in 1926.
He joined the military uprising against the constitutional government of President Manuel Azaña, addressing Tetouan (Africa), where the so-called National Uprising began, beginning the Civil War. He was elected Generalissimo of the Armies and head of state. In 1938 he took the title of leader of Spain and Generalissimo of the Army, Navy and Air Force. Upon completion in 1939 the Spanish civil war established an authoritarian regime.
In 1945, after the Second World War, his regime was subjected to diplomatic isolation by the victorious powers. The military pacts with the United States in 1956 ended this isolation. In 1959, the stabilization plan started opening promoting strong economic growth that characterized the decade of the 60s. Proclaimed in 1969 Juan Carlos de Borbón as his successor.
